RAPToR – an ultrasensitive and rapid bedside test for sepsis
Project summary
Sepsis is a dysregulated host response to an infection that leads to life-threatening multiple organ failure with a mortality of 20-30% and 11 million deaths per year. Treatment often fails, because sepsis is recognized and treated too late in the course of the disease. There is thus an urgent need for an ultrasensitive and rapid test to detect sepsis before patients develop symptoms, in order to guarantee treatment success. We will develop a bedside test for sepsis that relies on the rapid detection of the earliest infection markers before levels of established serum markers, such as C-reactive protein, rise.
